Upper Gastro Intestinal Cancer

The Upper Gastro-intestinal (GI) Managed Clinical Network (MCN) was established in 2004. The aim of the network is to improve the quality of service and ensure equity of care to all patients in the West of Scotland who are referred for assessment, diagnosis and treatment of oesophageal and gastric cancers, commonly known as the gullet and stomach.

The MCN brings together healthcare professionals from all the various specialties into recognised multidisciplinary teams (MDTs). These MDTs consist of surgeons, gastroenterologists, radiologists, pathologists, clinical and medical oncologists, palliative care clinicians, clinical nurse specialists and dietitians; making sure that every patient gets access to specialist treatment when required. MDTs meet every week to discuss all new cases of cancer and to review the treatment plan provided to patients.
Our Lead Clinician reports to the Regional Cancer Advisory Group to inform on network issues, challenges and priorities in order to deliver the highest standard of care to those diagnosed with oesophageal and gastric cancers.
