Primary Care Cancer Group

Primary Care health professionals play an important role in delivering high quality care to patients with cancer. This is emphasised within the Scottish Government’s plans to improve the delivery of care to patients with cancer.

What is Primary Care?
Primary care refers to the type of ‘health service’ that people normally make first contact with when seeking advice about their health. General Practitioners, Community Pharmacists, Community Nurses and Dentists all work within Primary Care.
Primary Care health professionals are involved in many different aspects of cancer care both before and after a patient’s diagnosis. They work closely with the hospital (secondary care) to help provide ongoing advice and care for patients with cancer.

In 2005 a specialty network was established and the Primary Care Cancer Group consists of a range of individuals and organisations that care for people with cancer in the community across the West of Scotland. The network has a pivotal role in the interface between primary and secondary care by co-ordinating and improving the delivery of cancer care.
